CONTINUED TRADITION

Using art to express ourselves and the common values we share.

CELEBRATING OUR PREDECESSORS

Norfolk Southern’s history spans nearly two centuries, with roots in the earliest days of American railroading. At the time of the merger of Norfolk & Western and Southern Railway in 1982, former Chairman Arnold McKinnon seized an opportunity to unify our new company by forming an art committee to celebrate the strengths of our predecessors and our shared values. McKinnon and the committee began building an art collection that would highlight these values and create a sense of unity among the employees of the newly formed Norfolk Southern.

Building a Strong Culture

Fast forward to the present

We have continued this tradition of using art to express ourselves and our shared values.

Much of the art from our previous headquarters in Norfolk, Virginia, made its way to our new building in Atlanta, Georgia. When we moved into our new headquarters, additional artwork was purchased from local artists and we selected pieces that most aligned with who we are and who we strive to be – pieces that reflect industry, innovation, and inclusion. That’s why our art reflects grit and resolve, underscoring the magnitude of our work and its impact to our country. It conveys motion and momentum, signaling optimism and the promise of progress, growth, and new ideas. It asserts the power of diversity, encouraging us all to unlock the strength of our unique experiences and perspectives.

SUPPORTING THE LOCAL ART COMMUNITY

Understanding the impact that art can have, Norfolk Southern is dedicated to supporting the arts and culture in the communities we serve. In Atlanta, Norfolk Southern has not only purchased art from local artists but also provides grants to various organizations in Atlanta that are dedicated to promoting arts and culture. Norfolk Southern also supports its local art community through its artist-in-residence program. Located on the Spring Street side of its headquarters, a studio space with expansive glass windows has been designated to accommodate a local artist, providing them with a dedicated space to unleash their creativity over the course of two years.
