Norfolk Southern is monitoring and preparing for Winter Storm Hernando, a rapidly strengthening system forecast to impact large portions of the Northeast and Mid‑Atlantic this weekend. The storm started developing today and is expected to persist through Monday, bringing heavy snow, strong winds, and sub‑freezing temperatures. Forecasts call for 6–12 inches of snow across the NY/NJ metro and at least 6 inches from Boston to Philadelphia. Wind gusts of 30–50 mph may create blowing snow, near‑whiteout conditions, and possible coastal flooding along the East Coast.
NS is proactively preparing equipment, scheduling crews, and evaluating customer and terminal impacts to combat the impacts of this event. At this time, all Norfolk Southern intermodal facilities are operating, and no terminal or gate closures are planned. However, if conditions warrant, shipments may be held at origin points or temporary origin ingate closures may be enacted to minimize any impacts to our network.
Customers are strongly encouraged to review local forecasts and Department of Transportation information for updates regarding conditions in their local areas.
