Norfolk Southern is actively managing the impacts of Tropical Storm Chantal, which made landfall on July 6 near Litchfield Beach, SC, and was later downgraded to a tropical depression as it has moved through North Carolina and into Virginia. Main Line (Greensboro, NC - Raleigh, NC) service has been suspended since July 6 due to heavy rainfall, flooding, and washouts. Access to the area has been hindered by the closure of Interstate 40 in both directions at Mebane, NC, along with several road closures. Service on the CF Branch Line (Out of Greensboro, NC) remains halted due to washouts.
NS Network Impact:
Restoration on both lines is currently projected for Wednesday, July 9, at 1200, pending further engineering assessments.
Customer Impact: Customers with shipments moving through the affected areas may experience delays of 48 to 72 hours. We understand the importance of your shipments and are working diligently to minimize disruptions. Note that routes to/from the Chariotte & Greensboro intermodal facilities remain operational; both facilities are operating under normal conditions.
Safety First: The safety of our employees, customers, and communities remains our top priority.
Engineering teams are actively patrolling affected districts, inspecting for hazards such as downed trees and unstable embankments. Flash flood warnings remain in effect in some areas, and all operations are proceeding with caution. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to restore service safely and efficiently.
