SERVICE ALERT: UPDATE - Flooding in Southern West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, Southwest Virginia, and Eastern Ohio

ATLANTA, GA

Norfolk Southern continues to respond to severe flooding in Southern West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky, Southwest Virginia, and Eastern Ohio, which has impacted our rail network from both engineering and mechanical standpoints. Our teams are working around the clock to safely assess conditions, reroute traffic, and fully restore service.

Service Recovery Efforts:
  • Norfolk Southern teams are working to safely restore service to Mainline 1 and 2 west of Williamson, West Virginia. Both are out of service due to an additional washout that occurred this morning.
  • The timeline for full-service restoration remains unknown, and we will provide updates as available.

Customer Impact:
  • An embargo (NS 000725) was issued on new shipments on February 16, 2025 and remains in effect today, February 18, 2025. The embargo does not impact shipments moving in Intermodal, Coal/Coke, or Automotive service.
  • Norfolk Southern will work with impacted customers to manage contractual obligations regarding shipments on a case-by-case basis.

    - If your shipments are affected, your Norfolk Southern account manager will continue to be in contact with you directly.

    - Customers are encouraged to provide account managers a list of affected railcars to help expedite operational adjustments.

We are committed to transparent communication and will provide further updates as assessments continue. Thank you for your patience as we safely work to restore service in this area.
