NORFOLK SOUTHERN LAWMEN

In 1951, D.W. Brosnan, Southern Railway Executive Vice President of Operations and future Chairman, began holding meetings for officers in Almond, N.C. Brosnan asked Snow Baker, a lieutenant in the railroad’s police department, to assemble some musical entertainment. Baker rounded up instruments and a “mountain man” who could play the banjo, and the “Almond Hillbillies” were born.

In later years, the band would entertain at Brosnan Forest, a nature preserve in South Carolina where the company’s conference center is located. The band eventually became known as The Lawmen, because it was formed from the railroad’s police department.

Today, The Lawmen perform at some 200 company and public events for NS annually. They play a little bit of everything, including mountain, beach, pop, rock, and bluegrass. They have appeared on national television and the Grand Ole Opry.
