Norfolk Southern is restoring former woodlands in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley and generating economic benefits for multiple stakeholders through a multiyear Trees and Trains program. Working with GreenTrees, a reforestation and carbon capture company, NS is planting 6 million trees on 10,000 acres in the valley, the nation’s largest watershed and a vital wildlife habitat.
GreenTrees’ largest corporate investor, NS is helping to revitalize the region’s economy while improving its environmental health. The reforested land eventually will generate 1.12 million tons of carbon-offset credits, equivalent to one-fifth of NS’ annual carbon emissions.
